Dag 69 – turisttid
Gået i dag – 0 km
Der er mange dage med 0 km for tiden. Jeg kunne godt bekymre mig over det – tiden går, klokken slår, det bliver efterår i Canada og alt det der.
Men jeg er vild med små byer i USA. Altså virkelig begejstret for at træde ind i en kaffebiks med en opslagstavle, hvor der en uge efter Fourth of July stadig hænger en plakat med alle nationaldagens aktiviteter (læs: arm wrestling, watermelon eating contest, mud volleyball), at høre den gammeldags klokke klimte, når jeg åbner døren til den General Store der har alt og det hele i et stort roderi oveni hinanden, og at spise en massiv tallerkenfuld bacon, æg og hashbrowns med udsigt til Main Street og en servitrice, der kalder en Honey.
Det er ferie på en anden måde end at tonse afsted på støvede stier, men en slags ferie, jeg – også – gerne vil have med, så i dag snuppede jeg sådan en feriedag i Bridgeport.
Og fik samtidig vasket tøj – jeg er en haj til møntvaskerier by now og helt okay med at være iført mit regntøj og nothing else imens – købt nye forsyninger af mad – stadig den kolde slags, fordi min gryde og brænder først når frem til mig fra mit private yndlingspostbud i San Francisco, Tore, om fire dage – og ikke mindst shippet den forhadte Bear canister afsted fra posthuset til selvsamme Tore.
Og så lå jeg ellers derefter vandret på min hotelseng og var online, mens jeg med jævne mellemrum råbte ud i gangen til housekeepingholdet, der åbenbart var på heldagsansættelse, at nej, de behøvede ikke støvsuge på vores værelse. Og nej, heller ikke rede seng og presse lagenet ned til kineserne (jeg har aldrig fattet de der konvolutopredninger på hoteller.)
Damien havde alle de samme ærinder som mig, men så også lige en VM-kamp, der stod højt på to-do listen, og på et historisk hotel er der selvfølgelig ikke TV på værelset, så jeg havde det ret meget for mig selv. Og fik endda et kort powernap inden dinnertime.
Som i dag foregik på byens anden Bar & Grill, Rhinos. Med stort set samme menu som i går, men det havde jeg ingen problemer med. Keep that butter coming. Og helst meget af det, for mit bad i går afslørede, hvad jeg godt har kunnet mærke på mine løsere og løsere shorts, men ikke set – mangel på spejl derude i vildmarken, you know – at mine hofteben ligner noget, nogen har klistret udenpå mig. Jeg er fu**ing alt for tynd.
Damien har meget far-agtigt åbenbart observeret det samme, eller også handler det om at komme af med noget vægt (eller ting der fedter) i hans rygsæk, for han tilbød mig, da vi pakkede vores mad til næste stræk, sin flaske med olivenolie og mente, at den ville come in handy hos mig.
Så med olivenolie er der ekstra kalorier til min tun, salami og den blok ost, der er med i madposen. I øvrigt sammen med en pose flæskesvær. Happy me, der fandt dem på den lokale tankstation. Selv om støvet på posen indikerede, at det nok ikke er dem, der sælger allerbedst her i Bridgeport. Oh Well, jeg var glad.
Og SÅ er jeg klar til at vandre i morgen. Ikke flere sløve fridage; nu er jeg ude af de høje bjerge og – forhåbentlig – på vej ind i et område med et terræn, der er lettere. Ingen trappetrin til kæmper, ikke en million trærødder alle vegne og ikke vilde stigninger, bare nem (eller nemmere) vandring og nye fine udsigter. Nordcalifornien, jeg glæder mig til dig.

You have already accomplished way more than I ever will, but we do have one acievement in common…Mount Whitney!
